Short answer first: there is no single best material for kitchen cabinets — the right answer depends on which part of the cabinet you are building. For cabinet boxes in a normal dry kitchen, fully edge-banded certified particle board (18 mm, moisture-resistant grade in the sink cabinet) is the global mainstream and the best cost-performance choice. For doors and fronts, MDF takes routed and painted profiles, while melamine-faced board gives the cheapest convincing wood grain. For sink bases, dishwashers and any damp zone, use plywood. Solid wood belongs on frames, handles and pieces meant to be seen and kept. Build every cabinet from one material and you will either overspend or under-protect it.

Short answer first: there is no single best wood for furniture — the right species depends on four things: how hard the piece will be used, how much moisture it will see, what finish you want, and your budget. For premium residential and hospitality work, walnut and oak lead. For hard-wearing commercial furniture, ash and maple. Teak belongs in humid and outdoor settings, while rubberwood is the best-value solid wood and pine the budget option. Everything else is a variation on those five positions.

Short answer first: plywood wins on strength, moisture resistance and edges; MDF wins on surface quality, machining and price. If the panel will get wet, carry load, or show a bare edge, use plywood. If it will be routed, carved or painted — cabinet doors, moldings, display panels — MDF is the better material, and it is usually the cheaper one. Most real furniture projects use both, and the skill is knowing which part gets which.

If your room is dry and your desk only carries light loads — a laptop and a desk lamp — certified particleboard is enough and genuinely saves money. But once you clamp on a monitor arm, keep changing your screw layout, or build long-span bookshelves, you need plywood or solid wood: screw-holding power and sag resistance are exactly where plywood and solid wood excel.

For rental and flip furniture, the workhorse is fully edge-banded certified particleboard with melamine scratch-resistant faces; use plywood for kitchen and bath, OSB for garage and utility shelving, and skip solid wood — when you compare its cost against tenant turnover, landlords rarely recover the furniture cost at resale. The winning metric in a rental isn't “best material” — it's cost recovery under annual tenant wear.

Children's furniture must meet ENF grade (formaldehyde ≤0.025 mg/m³) or preferably use solid wood with “undetected” harmful substances in auxiliary materials; structures must have no sharp corners (corner radius ≥10 mm), no glass, and tall cabinets must be fitted with anti-tip devices. And as long as the furniture is certified low-emission, MDF is safe in a kids' room — look for US CARB Phase 2 / EPA TSCA Title VI, or E0–E1 grades. Emissions come from the adhesive system, not from the wood fiber itself, so the certificate matters more than the board's name. Certified particleboard is equally fine; when the budget allows, solid wood is the naturally lowest-emission choice.
